This Day in Train History by Greatxu

6/11/09: Today marks the 37th Anniversary of the Eltham Hall rail crash. This crash, which occurred in 1972, killed a total of 6 people and injured over 100. It was caused by a driving error, and the train operator of the train was intoxicated (basically drunk). The crash occurred close to the Eltham Hall station in the British Railway System, specifically in a curve designed for trains to go through at 20 mph. However, the train operator was at a speed of 65 mph at the curve. The train was running on the Bexleyheath Line in the southern UK, between the stations "Margate" and "Kentish Town." Here's a picture of the crash, and info on the line.

This Day in Train History by Greatxu

Yes, this blog hasn't been updated for a long time, due to my lack of time to report them. But starting today, I will start a new cycle of posts on specific historical events occurring on this day.

For today (6/6/09):

Creation/Inauguration of the Pario Metro Line 5 (June 6, 1906)

Back then, Line 5 of the Paris Metro ran just 4 stops from the station "" to "Gare "D'Austerlitz." It is Paris Metro's 4th oldest line, and nowadays runs a total of 22 stops, a distance of 14.6 km (9.1 miles). Line 5 is important not only in that it offers service to tourist attractions such as Bastille and Parc de la Villette, but because it serves 3 of Paris's important railways stations (Gare D'Austerlitz, Gare du Nord, Gard de L'est), similar to having an NYC subway line serve 3 stations with a railroad station like Grand Central Terminal (OUCH).

French --> "Gare" means "railroad station," "Nord" means "North," "L'est" means "East," "D'Austerlitz" is a French name, "Place D'Italie" is a neighborhood in Paris named after Avenue D'Italie, one of the historical roads linking Paris to Italy.
